Fluoxetine Uses

Based on the roles of neurotransmitters, any imbalance results in onset of depression. The mechanism of Fluoxetine action is prevention of serotonin reuptake by nerve cells after it has been secreted. Because uptake is a necessary step to in the direction of removal of released neurotransmitter and ending their action on adjacent nerves.

Availability of Fluoxetine:

Available in Capsules: 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg strengths and Retard action 90 mg Tablet.

Fluoxetine is also available in Oral Suspension of 20 mg/5 ml for use of children.

STORAGE: Fluoxetine should be stored at room temperature 15-30°C (59-86°F).

Fluoxetine finds use in treating following conditions:

Fluoxetine DOSE:

Depression of adults is treated by using 20-80 mg of fluoxetine daily. The children are advised a dose of 10 mg to 20 mg for treating depression. After carrying on above treatment for 13 weeks, once in a week dose keeps the patients comfortable.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder present in adults and children is treated with 20-60 mg daily and panic disorder is taken care of with 10-60 mg daily. The advised range for PMDD is 20 mg administered every day of the menstrual cycle or daily for 14 days before the onset of menstruation counting from the first day of menses.

The advised treatment in case of resistant depression is 20-50 mg of fluoxetine and 5-20 mg olanzapine once daily in the evening.

The management of depression associated with bipolar disorder is done by 20-50 mg fluoxetine and 5-12.5 mg olanzapine once daily in the evening.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Fluoxetine is not to be taken in combination with any monoamine oxidase inhibitor category of antidepressants or medications inhibiting monoamine oxidase.

Fluoxetine is not recommended to be taken within a fortnight after cessation of MAOIs.

Since fluoxetine remains active for many weeks, MAOIs are not to be given for at least 5 weeks after fluoxetine cessation. 

Taking fluoxetine:

Follow the prescription of the Medical Practitioner without deviation. Do not take higher dose fluoxetine and use it for the period advised.

Do not break, chew, or open retard action table just swallow the whole pill/capsule. Active ingredients are released in a timed manner. By chewing the tab/capsule the entire quantity shall be released causing discomfort.

For children shake well Oral Suspension before use and use a graduated measure spoon instead of any spoon available.

One starts feeling better after a period of 4 weeks or a little longer. Do not stop taking fluoxetine without consulting Medical Practitioner.

Effects of Missed Dose:

Take the missed dose the moment you come to know. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose. Do not take extra medicine to compensate for missed dose.

Overdose of Fluoxetine:

A consultation with the Medical Practitioner is required to assess the effects of overdose and advise the necessary care at home or hospitalization if the condition of nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, fainting, seizures or a state of coma.

Avoid taking with Fluoxetine Treatment:

Consumption of alcohol should not be done, which can enhance the side effects of fluoxetine. Driving of vehicle or operation of a machine should be done only if one feels alright.

Fluoxetine side effects

One can experience allergic reaction like skin rash or hives; uneasiness in breathing; swollen face, lips, tongue, or throat. Advice from the doctor shall be helpful.

If there are sudden symptoms becoming unmanageable in respect of mood or behavior changes, over anxiety, feeling panicked, difficult to get sleep or if one feels impulsive, irritation of mind, agitated, hostile the treating doctor should be consulted for proper advice.
